Question for Statler experts
« on: July 17, 2011, 07:48:44 PM »
Does anyone know if the 60s version of "Church in the Wildwood" was ever issued on CD?  I have a copy sourced from an album release, but have never found this on any of the numerous Columbia anthologies out there.  My educated guess is that it never was released on CD, but figured I'd check here.

Thanks.

I googled "Statler Brothers" Church in the Wildwood".  It took me to amazon, where it said that the song was on "The complete Lester Moran and theCadillac Cowboys album.  Which leads me to believe it was done in the "Roadhog" style rather than the Statler style!

I have about 25 albums dating back to the Flowers on the Wall album.  I have one album, "Country Music" with a picture of a very young Harold, Don, Phil, and Lew and also an "inset" photo of the "Cadillac Cowboys".  On the album they do the "Saturday Morning Radio Show" with Lester "Roadhog" Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys" but there is no evidence of "Church in the Wildwood" being done on it.  I'm not sure if there was a separate album of the "Cowboys" or not.

Yes, "Church/Wildwood" was done in Roadhog style - and to great effect!  (Eddie - yes, the CC got their own album called "Alive at the JMB HS" - later reissued on the CD Jay mentioned).

The only release I'm aware of for the straight version was on a couple of those compilation albums Columbia used to do where they would put a lot of tracks from different artists on their rosters.

"Church/Wildwood" was one of a number of gospel songs the Statlers recorded that were never included by Columbia on a Statler album.  Perhaps "Oh Happy Day" was originally envisioned as a 2 record set or perhaps a follow up was planned and partially executed, but never finished.  But either way, still in Columbia's vaults are a fair number of Statler tracks (some gospel and some secular) that have never been released.

With news of the "death" of physical media seemingly being reported daily, I'm slowly resigning myself to the fact that a high quality comprehensive reissue program simply isn't going to happen.  Don has said their lawyers are trying to work out licensing deals, etc. but if it hasn't happened yet, it probably isn't going to.  (I'll gladly be proven wrong on this :) )

I took a quick peek at Google for the "CC" album at the JMB HS.  It shows copyrighted by "Mercury Records" in 1995 - not sure if they're still alive or eaten up by another record/cd company.
