Appreciate what you have
« on: June 27, 2010, 02:12:20 PM »
After an exhausting morning at the attorney's office on Thursday, I came home, had a bite to eat and sat down to watch the Phillies game - that's the last I remember until I woke up a little while later -hmmm -the TV is off - ahhh yess - a power failure - I had slept through a monster storm with hurricane force winds and missed it all.  Supposedly 100,000 homes were without power.  That was Thursday - today's Sunday and we just got the power back at noon.  The fridge is a disaster - most of the food will be in the trash and have to go shopping for replacements.  Being without electricity for 3 days was more than I want to go through again.  Weather forecasts for a storm tomorrow - hopefully we keep the power this time - I think I'll wait a day before I go shopping.

Eddie, so sorry you have had to go through this.  Maybe Ro was keeping watch and made sure you could not hear the winds and thunder so you could sleep.

Sarah,

Ro always said I could sleep through a war.  In fact, I remember when I was in the army stationed at Ft. Riley, Ro and I were living off base and I slept through an earthquake (minor) there. I was going through withdrawal symtoms for 3 days without being on here.

You certainly must have needed the rest.  Wow!

We are seldom without power for very long.  We live within sight of the hospital and that puts us on a priority line.  Our daughter and her family lose power often and for long periods so they bought a generator.  They have radiant heat in the floors of their house and broken water pipes would really be a disaster.

Glad you finally got power back, Eddie.  I don't think we've ever had to go that long without power.  Dave was talking to one of our daughters a little bit ago.  He told me that maybe we don't want to go home.  The main sewer line in Scottsbluff broke and the city has been having to dump raw sewage into the river.  Evidentally it's been very hot and humid back there since we've been gone and Jen says that you can't get away from the smell.  The line hasn't been fixed yet so they're still dumping it into the river.  Dave may be right, maybe we don't want to go home!

Cindy,

It sounds like you are better off staying where you're at.  I emptied fridges and threw everything away and then went shopping.  I don't even want to tell you what it all cost.  And all that did was put food in one fridge - that didn't account for replacing all that Ro had put in the fridge in the basement. I hope everything gets settled and you get to go home soon.

Eddie, I am so sorry for all the food and cash you had to lose because of the power failure. Just dealing with it all was surely daunting. It must have been a real mess!  I too would have been lost w/o my internet, but not having the air conditioning would have been awful for me.

A couple of years ago in July..same thing happened. The trees had fallen on power lines all over town. The electric was out for 3 days for most of us. Even the grocery store was out and all the places we usually go to for food or to eat out. I am like you...hope this never happens again.

Eddie,

I would check with your insurance company.  What you lost might be covered under your homeowners policy.

I remember when I was a kid, we lost power for a week due to a major ice storm.  We had to go to a friends home to stay because it was in the winter and they had a fire place for heat.

Sarah, not only would I miss the air conditioner and internet, I would miss the tv.  Boy, what did people do back before all these were invented????

Debbi,

Having worked for an insurance company, that was the first place I looked - unfortunately they specifically do not cover that.  I guess when they did do it, all of a sudden people began having more than one fridge/freezer - and coincidentally on the day the power went out - they were all completely FULL.   ;D

I did miss the internet and air conditoning - as it was really hot - not sure I missed the TV - I had a battery powered radio to keep up with the world.

Debbi--

Read by candlelight or fire light, played games, played instruments, sang, went to sleep early and got up at dawn....
