I also thought of something else.  Although my mother had home care workers who came and prepared her meals for the week, then came every morning to fix her breakfast & set up things for her lunch & dinner, the quantity of food she was eating was very small.  I contacted the hospital dietitian & asked for advice.  She gave me all kinds of suggestions on how to put more nutrition and fat into her diet using her regular recipes.  I then rewrote her recipes and left them for homecare to use.  Eating with her more than twice a week was difficult for us to manage so I did what I could otherwise.  Also most dietitians and Drs. recommend Boost (or similar product) to enhance the elderly's diet.  But we can't force our parents to take more than they want so my mother made a can last a week - the idea of course was a can a day.

I can't thank you all enough for the suggestions, ideas, and info! When I talk to Dad on the phone, he sounds pretty good, though he does get things mixed up a lot. (dr. appointments, etc.) I write his appointments down as soon as he gets them, so that I can remind him. When I go into town and see him , that is when it really hits me how weak and thin he is. He was talking about a fishing pole he saw on tv that he wants, but doesn't know if he should spend the money. So I know he is still interested in trying to get out and do some things. If I can find out what he wants, I'll get him that fishing pole. He said something about it folding up so that he could easily get it in the car. Who knows if it is any good---you know how they put things on tv ads!

So far, no word from the dr. I thought maybe he would call and want to talk to Dad right away.

Thanks again for everything. I intend to follow through with the suggestions!

Carolyn,

How's your dad doing today?  I've had you in my thoughts and I surely hope that things are looking brighter.

My dad loved to go fishing, too.  He and my mom would go, pack themselves a picnic-type lunch, and have a nice time of enjoying the outdoors and the quiet time that is involved in fishing.  They also caught a whole lot of fish bigger than I was ever lucky enough to reel in!

We'll keep you and your dad in our prayers, and I also thank you for yours on our behalf.  May God bless your dad and keep him safe and well.

Charlie had today off as a vacation day so that he could get started stripping and refinishing our deck.  When I called Dad to check on him, he wanted to know if it was ok to come out to visit. Of course I said yes, but was a little afraid for him. He hasn't been going out much lately and I didn't know how he'd be. He came out and I noticed he has some trouble getting in and out of his car, but he did manage. It was so good to see him out of the house getting some good fresh air and sunshine. It was a beautiful day here today, although a bit breezy. His color looked better to me than it did the other day. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but to me he had more color in his face instead of the pasty, chalkie look he did have. He sat out on the deck for quite awhile, then decided to go home. When I called to check on him, he was back safe and sound. No one has called him about the bone scan and x-rays with any news.

Carolyn, your parents sound like mine---going fishing and packing picnics
were always a big thing around our house. We loved the time spent going places like that--especially up at the State Park that's about 20 mi. north of our town. We camped some up there too. I had my own cane pole and caught a few fish. Charlie and I used to take Daniel up to the lake fishing and did some camping. He still talks about how much fun he had. He had his own little kid's pole and tackle box. I'm glad you have memories like that too. They can mean the world.

So, it looks like we won't have any news before at least Monday, which will be  a week since Dad was at the hospital for the scan and xrays. You all have helped so much this week.

Carolyn,  It is so good to know that your dad felt up to coming for a visit.  The sun and fresh air will do him worlds of good.  I'm so glad to hear this.  Please tell him how much we are all praying for and pulling for him.

Perhaps, in this case, the "no news is good news" saying does apply, for surely if something were bad wrong with your dad, the Dr. would have already contacted him by now.  Either way, I believe, if I were you, I would call them Monday to make sure that something has not been pushed aside along the way.

You know that you are in our prayers and everyone of us wish that we could be there in person to help you through this...the next best thing to that is for us to pray for and be of comfort and moral support.  Take care and God Bless.

Patsy, I'll tell him. Thank you so much. As much as I hate waiting for answers, there is that one little bit of feeling that is relieved to not have been told anything, so that nothing has to be immediately delt with. I bet you understand what I mean, though that sounds bad. Yes, Monday I intend to call the dr  if no news has come by the afternoon.

It is such a comfort to come here and know we have the prayers and support. I can't imagine going through rough times with no support.

Carolyn,  I fully understand what you mean.  I've been through this several times with my mom.  I know how much you have gone through with Daniel and with health issues for you and Charlie.  God never gives us more than we can handle and HE is always there with us through these rough spots in life.  HE is a constant friend, comforter, and supporter in life.  HE will see you and your dad through, no matter what.

Carolyn,

How is your dad doing today?  I've been thinking about him, and about you.  I'm hoping things are going well.

Keep hanging in there.

Prayers for you both,

Glad to hear he is getting out and is looking better.  That in itself is good medicine.  Prayers still going up from here.

Carolyn,

Our prayers are still going up from here in South Bend, too.

I now fully understand the degree of comfort one receives from this website and these threads.  In some ways, perhaps I never totally realized that before, until I stood at the receiving end of all the comments and prayers of the wonderful people who are our fellow FTs and true friends.

Please keep us informed about your dad, and anytime you need some encouragement, this is the place to come to.  I know that first-hand now.

God bless you and your daddy.

Carolyn,  Did your Dad hear anything from the Doctor today?   Prayers continue from Georgia.

I wish I had some news, but there still is none. I had intended to call Dad's dr late today if he hadn't called Dad. After thinking about it, I decided to wait a day. The hospital told him it would probably take a week to get the results back, so I figured today is a week exactly. He does have an appointment for this Friday that has been made for awhile. I sure hope the dr isn't planning on making us wait till then for the results.

I sure appreciate you all asking how things are. Friends here really are a lifeline. You all have been here for us so many times over the past almost 3 years now.

When I talked to Dad earlier he sounded good. When Daniel, his Dad, and a friend stopped here tonight I found out that the railing for Dad's front steps is almost done. Daniel's Dad is having one made so that Dad can pull himself up the several steps to his front door. He had one made a long time ago for Daniel and knew how much of a help it will be. Dad has a lot of trouble with those several steps.

Thanks again EACH of you!!!

Well, the doctor couldn't be reached today and no one called my Dad. It's looking more and more like we may not know till Friday. I wanted to let you know what I know~ nothing.

Dad was super tired today, but then we all have days like that at times.
